About us & Concept

What is a Living Library?

A Living Library works just like a regular library, except instead of borrowing a book, you borrow a person. That person is called a Living Book.

The Living Library is a participatory format that creates spaces for direct conversation and exchange between people from all walks of life. The “Books” are people who share their lived experiences through open conversations, in a respectful and welcoming environment. Chat with the Living Book of your choice for 20 to 30 minutes. Ask your questions. Listen to their story.

The objective

  • Create simple, respectful dialogue
  • Break down bias
  • Better understand our differences

Initiative developed and supported by the Council of Europe

  • A lot of discrimination comes from

    • Fear of the unknown
    • Stereotypes
    • Lack of direct contact
    • Preconceived ideas
  • The Living Library lets you:

    • Meet people you might never otherwise cross paths with
    • Speak freely
    • Ask questions
    • Better understand others
    • Talk with a person, not about them
  • How does it work?
